SuperComputing 2016 Day 1 (Monday)

Well, as promised here is the first of my mini blogs from the SuperComputing conference in Salt Lake City, Utah in the USA.

I am attending the conference both as an interested member of the MicroNanoFlows group and also in an official capacity as a representative of STFC. Today has mainly been about the exhibitors getting their stands ready, there is an eclectic mix ranging from huge corporate IT companies like IBM, NVIDIA and Dell through to European science institutions like Barcelona Supercomputing Centre, as well as of course, STFC!

To say that I can't quite believe the scale of this conference is an understatement, for many companies this is a key event in the year and they spare no expense. There are something like 5000 individual exhibits in a 55,000 square foot space… in the last 24 hours all of the booths have been set up (some are incredibly elaborate) and the whole place has been carpeted, the big companies even brought their own really soft underlay!

The technical program kicks of tomorrow with a good few HPC oriented Molecular Dynamics talks, so I'll be reporting back with more details about that. In the meantime however, here's two shots of the exhibition hall being set up this morning that I took from STFC's stand location, what you can see in these is about half the total space!
